Each episode recounts extraordinary and out-of-the-ordinary events, in some cases fantastic while in others in a decidedly more lugubrious and horrific key. We begin with poor Nathaniel, the protagonist of the first episode, prey to childhood memories and fears towards a family friend, the lugubrious lawyer Coppelius. Then we move on to the misfortune of young Matthew visiting Mr De Peyhorrade’s house to assess the authenticity of his statue, a beautiful bronze Venus found on his estate. Not least the adventure of the poor English family who are terrorised by the presence of the ghost of Mr Edmund Horne. And then there are possessed hands, devils in bottles, strange dreams….
