Tuscany, summer 1944. Having lost their parents in a car accident, little sisters Penny and Baby are taken to their aunt and uncle, who live in a large house in the country. Katchen, their mother’s sister, has married Wilhelm, a German intellectual who loves music and art, and they have a teenage daughter. For the girls, a new life begins, in which they find some difficulty in fitting in. Above all, Penny is accused of faults that she believes she has not committed, she cries and says she wants to die. It is only a matter of misunderstandings, because little by little the uncles overcome her and her little sister’s distrust, and a better climate begins to be created in the big house. The two girls make friends with the children of the peasants, joke about the first throbs of love, show their strong religious sense. External events, however, press on: Mussolini’s resignation, the armistice. On the road to retreat, a German column arrives at the villa and settles there. Knowing his Jewish origins, the parish priest warns Wilhelm of the raids in progress. After the column has left, Wilhelm in turn leaves the villa. But the Germans return, ask about the man, get no answer and then shoot the mother and daughter. When in turn returns, Wilhelm can not resist long the heartbreak of the incident, and kills himself. During the funeral, on the country road, British soldiers arrive. Everyone parties, and the coffins continue on their own.
