Voglia di Cantare is a television drama miniseries starring Gianni Morandi.
The plot of the drama – which represents the ideal ‘sequel’ (but not the sequel, as the story told is a different one) to Voglia di volare, and also starring Morandi – has similarities with Morandi’s own professional life. Significantly, the last episode features the song Uno su Mille (One out of a Thousand), published by Morandi that very year and with lyrics that are emblematic of the singer’s artistic history, which was then back in vogue after a period of oblivion.
Paolo Fontana is a singer on his waning path, struggling to relaunch himself.
His love life is also a complete mess: his wife has left him, taking their young son Luca with her. Paolo then embarks on a new relationship – initially only for publicity purposes – with a certain María Carrera.
Later Luca falls ill, and Paolo and his wife get back together. After the child’s recovery, Paolo is convinced that the worst is over: spurred on by his family, he feels ready to return to the stage.
He thus succeeds – albeit with difficulty and with the help of his wife – in convincing a record company to organise a concert for him, where he appears, immediately interpreting a new song with an autobiographical background (Uno su Mille, in the story composed by Paolo’s sister’s boyfriend). The audience, a little wary there and then, melts away at the end in a long applause.
