‘The big black sow’ is an expression given to the Mazzara family, consisting of Enrico, open to the interests of the new times, his grandmother, his father, an authoritarian person, and his four brothers. Enrico marries Anita, but as the family does not like strangers, the newcomer is unable to settle in, especially because of the constant heated conflicts in the house from which she would like to escape.
Anita meets doctor Ramez, with whom she elopes, but the latter dies on the way from cholera. Enrico catches up with her, tries to take her home, wishing to kill her, but recants his intentions and tries to reconnect with her. The brothers take turns raping their sister-in-law on their father’s orders and when he finds out, Enrico kills his brothers, sister and father, then flees with his grandmother and his wife, who will die in an asylum, finally turning himself in to the police.
