An opera for soloists, choir and orchestra by Luis Bacalov, directed by Carlos Branca.
Estaba la Madre, the first version of which was commissioned in 2004 by the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, is a secular Stabat Mater which, through four stories, recounts the pain and courage of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo as they search for their disappeared children: the tragedy of mothers who have lost their children and their subsequent struggle to obtain truth and justice.

The Roma Sinfonietta orchestra presents VIVALDI and BACALOV
Saturday 16 July, at 9.00 pm, Arena Palma, Trevignano
The concert programme is divided equally between two composers who appear to have very little in common, but who complement each other perfectly, thanks to the fact that they are both great composers and that their music exerts an irresistible charm on today’s listeners.
The first part is dedicated to Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.
The second part is dedicated to three pieces by Luis Bacalov. The first piece is taken from the soundtrack of Michael Radford’s film
*Il postino*, for which the Italian-Argentine composer won the Oscar for Best Original Score in 1996. This is followed by *Seduccion* and, finally, the *Concerto grosso* for violin, harpsichord and strings, almost a modern response to Vivaldi’s 18th-century *Concerto grosso*.
Joining the Roma Sinfonietta Orchestra are two of Italy’s finest musicians: Vincenzo Bolognese on violin and Luca Pincini on cello.

Miraltango – Rossini Philharmonic Choir
Monday 27 July, at 9.15 pm, Anfiteatro Parco Milalfiore, Pesaro
As part of the 30 Years in Choir Festival, the evening will feature a wide selection of tangos by some of the leading composers who have shaped the history of this genre, including Julio De Carlo, Alfredo Mazzeo, Julián Plaza, Osvaldo Bellinghieri and Astor Piazzolla. Part of the concert will be dedicated to Luis Bacalov’s Misa Tango, a work that blends different musical genres and combines the language of sacred music with the folk traditions of the River Plate region, including tangos, milongas and candombi.
The performers for the evening will be Daniel Pacitti on the bandoneón, Cristina Ratti on the piano, Giacomo Sebastianelli, Matteo Fratesi and Marco Roveti on percussion, Jimena Llanos (mezzo-soprano), Jorge Carlos Tello (baritone), and Deborah Mazza and Alan Spotti (dancers). The programme will be presented by Maria Chiara Mazzi, with So Hyun Lee as piano accompanist. The star of the evening will be the Coro Filarmonico Rossini, conducted by Federico Raffaelli.
