Estaba la Madre. Musica di Luis Bacalov

Estaba la Madre, the first version of which was commissioned in 2004 by Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, is a secular “Stabat Mater”, which through four stories traces the pain and courage of the mothers of Plaza de Mayo in search of their missing children: the drama of mothers who have lost their children and their subsequent struggle to obtain truth and justice. The work recalls sadly known facts: the victims of the military regime that took power in Argentina in March 1976. The opponents to the regime were abducted and no news of them were ever received, they were taken to concentration camps and the Police classified them as “Desaparecidos”. It was thanks to the courage of a group of mothers of kidnap victims, the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, that the world learned about the horrors of the military dictatorship. Estaba la Madre is a warning not to forget, hence the strength of the show, evocative of the horror that comes from normality.
