Loblolly by the Sea, a quiet town in New England. In the bookstore that manages, Helen MacFarquar sees herself delivered a letter. She opens it: it is a passionate love letter, sensual but anonymous. Attracted and intrigued, Helen, who now lives alone with a daughter, tries to figure out who might have sent it, and in her heart she hopes to be the recipient. Helen confides in Janet, her best friend, and then inevitably begins to take a closer look at some of the men she comes into contact with: first, George, who has been in love with her since high school and is now almost incredulous to see a certain attention from the woman; and then Johnny, a young student who agrees to work in the bookstore for the summer. The letter passes from hand to hand, and everyone makes a different assumption.
