Maria Adele, 17, spends most of her days playing chess since she lost her mother in a car accident the year before. During a game, the young woman meets Emilio, a journalist, who finds himself attracted to the young woman. One day Maria Adele, tidying up her mother’s papers, discovers a letter written by her father in which there is talk of adopting a child. The suspicion grows in her that she is not the daughter of those she has always considered her parents. Therefore, the young woman convinces Emilio to help her in her search for the truth. But Emilio is not a sports reporter as Maria Adele believes: he is actually conducting an investigation into paedophilia in which Sterlizia, a former court clerk and the young girl’s chess master, may be involved. Sterlizia first asks the girl to convince the journalist not to publish news about him, in exchange for the names of his birth parents, then, when Maria Adele refuses, he says he is ready to reveal those names to her in exchange for a game…
