Ferchaux, a rich and powerful businessman, is about to sign a huge contract to build a dam in Africa when he becomes the target of an investigating judge convinced of his involvement in a political-financial scandal. To get Ferchaux to confess, he sends his brother and his business partner to prison. Ferchaux is very close to Gilles, whom he has always protected, and fights to obtain his release. He receives help from Maud Lerner, the mistress of a sitting minister, and enlists the services of Mike Maudet, an ambitious and determined young man. First a chauffeur, then Ferchaux’s private secretary, he recognizes in him the passionate impulses and appetites of his youth. Soon Ferchaux realizes that his downfall is ordained by the same people who for years have profited from the system of embezzlement he had set up. The world is changing, Ferchaux’s time is over. It was time to escape.
