Around the living room of the Duchess Silvia Santi, wife of the industrialist Giorgio, revolve some of the most prominent characters of the aristocracy, finance, politics and clergy of the capital: an apparently respectable, but in reality squalid and corrupt. The penniless Baron De Vittis, after stealing and swallowing a precious earring, is found and forced to return the jewel with the help of a purgative. Mino Rappi, a social climber, to ingratiate himself with the industrialist Santi, accompanies him to a dating house where he meets his wife; amused by the incident, the industrialist decides to grant Rappi a loan, but he dies of a heart attack. The Duchess Santi, to extort her husband three hundred million, organizes a fake kidnapping of her children. The princess Dedè Marescalchi, skillfully guided by her husband, prostitutes herself to important and wealthy people, but fails with a politician who, on the contrary, shows an abnormal interest in the prince. Elena Teopulos, wife of a Greek shipowner, succeeds, with the help of her mother, to kill her husband and to avoid, thanks to her important friendships, the indictment. Almost all of these characters will perish at sea during a tragic cruise aboard a yacht, while a police commissioner who proved too zealous in carrying out his investigations on the environment in question, will be permanently silenced with a promotion and with the relative transfer.
