Just released from a Canadian prison where he served six months for a carjacking, young Floyd Gambino partners with elderly Joe in robbing a jewelry store. The heist succeeds but a policeman dies. Having freed themselves from their pursuers, the two partners separate, meeting in a small town in the United States, on the border with Canada. Due to a trivial accident Floyd – who has the loot with him, precious stones worth half a million dollars – is forced to take shelter in a remote motel, run by Fred Knowlton and his wife Michéle. Michéle senses Floyd’s true identity, protects him and, making him believe that she has the jewels that have disappeared in the meantime, convinces him to take her away with him. Fleeing Joe, who, believing himself to have been duped, reaches the motel to have the jewels delivered. Floyd and Michéle leave, one in a car, the other in a bus. Joe chases the bus, gets the woman off and kills her, but he doesn’t find the jewels, nor does Floyd, who, having arrived at the scene of the crime, kills his partner in turn. In the motel, meanwhile, Michéle’s niece and her fiancé are enjoying themselves, convinced that they have carried out a perfect theft, and that they have nothing more to fear. But Floyd has guessed the truth, and is now looming over them…
