Following the brutal murder of a man hanging from the hook of a crane in the port of Genoa, commissioner Nicola Sironi – a ‘tough guy’ separated from his wife and challenged by his only son, who resents the limits that the law and internal regulations impose on police work – investigates a Mafia racket that regulates prices in the wholesale markets of the Ligurian capital. The commissioner’s work is made difficult, however, by the omertà (code of silence), the systematic suppression of probable witnesses, and the betrayal of a colleague, commissioner Martino, who has sold out to the head of the racket. Discovered and having come to his senses, Martino sets a trap for the latter by recording a compromising telephone call, but he is killed by his men, while someone in the police offices makes the ‘tapes’ disappear. Seeing his prey – an unsuspected industrialist and newspaper owner – escape him, Sironi decides to take justice into his own hands: he kidnaps the boss and has him killed by a speeding train.
