Betty, a thirteen-year old immigrant from the South and resident in the Turin belt of social and moral disintegration; in the infamous Via Millelire, she has a family in shambles behind her: a mother walking a never-ending brood of brothers and sisters, one of whom is a semi-drug addict, and her father in prison. Around her, a decaying environment: drugs, violence, prostitution … The girl comes and goes in this environment, perpetually fleeing: from her family, from short relationships with unscrupulous and unscrupulous young people, from ‘meeting centres’ and reformatories. She is restless, shameless, irresponsible. Her constant escapism is punctuated by recurrent returns to a squalid social centre and a bored and resigned social worker, who nevertheless tries something to straighten her out. But to no avail. The film closes, bitterly, on Betty’s umpteenth escape and any glimmer of hope.
